NCA Training Course: Retrofitting for Accessibility

The National Center on Accessibility training course "Retrofitting for Accessibility" is designed for Maintenance Professionals, Land Planning Analysts, Construction Specialists, Facility Managers, Trails Supervisors, Architects, Forest Access Coordinators, Landscape Architects, Parks Planners, Visitor Services Specialists, Outdoor Recreational Planners, Program Development Specialists, Facility Management Specialists, Preservation Supervisors, Trails Specialists, Concessions Specialists, Facility Managers, Project Managers, Safety Officers, Civil Engineers, Accessibility Coordinators and Planners.

This course provides education on federal legislations and accessibility requirements as applied to park and recreation facilities and programs. Educational sessions will provide an understanding of the characteristics and needs of people with disabilities.* Curriculum emphasis will include application of accessibility standards, barrier removal, safety issues associated with accessibility, and ongoing facility maintenance to assure optimum access for visitors including those with disabilities. Participants will learn how to identify barriers and initiate appropriate solutions for facility renovations beneficial to user groups of all abilities. This course has an active field-based component that is designed to provide hands-on experiences identifying accessibility design problems in existing facilities and potential considerations and solutions for improving access.

The primary field work will be done in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone National Park. The park headquarters are located at Mammoth Hot Springs. The hotel is located ¾ of a mile outside of the park boundaries.

  • *Prerequisite:
    • A prerequisite seminar on disability awareness will precede the course. The disability awareness seminar will give participants a better understanding of legislation, attitudes, architectural and programmatic needs in order to provide quality services to people with disabilities. The prerequisite seminar is mandatory for all participants who have not attended a previous NCA core course or NCA disability awareness seminar.

  • Tuition:
    • Disability Awareness - $100.00 (Prerequisite-Monday) 8 hrs for a combined total of 28 hours

      Retrofitting for Accessibility - $450.00 (Tuesday-Thursday)

      NPS personnel should contact NCA for the NPS rate.

      Late registrations will be accepted as space allows.

      A $150.00 fee will be assessed for all cancellations after September 10, 2004.

  • Accommodations:
    • The training will be held at the Yellowstone Comfort Inn, individuals will be responsible for making their own reservations. The room rate is $55.00 per night, which meets per diem requirements. Reservations must be made by September 3, 2004 to guarantee this rate. When making reservations, please identify yourself as a participant in the "Accessibility Conference" so that your room will be accounted for from the reserved block. If for any reason you need to cancel your reservation with the hotel, you will need to do so at least 72 hours prior to check in on October 3, 2004.

    • The closest airport is Bozeman, MT at a distance of about 100 miles. There is an airport shuttle service there, you need to call for reservations as they do not have a regular schedule but run on demand.

  • Areas of Interest:
    • Yellowstone National Park's Albright Visitor Center and Museum is located at Mammoth Hot Springs. "Fort Yellowstone" Bachelor Officers Quarters was constructed by the US Cavalry while it was charged with the protection of Yellowstone Park. The Museum of the National Park Ranger is located in the Norris Geyser Basin area and is approximately 25 miles from the hotel. Old Faithful is approximately 30 miles further from Norris for further information about the oldest of our national parks please visit the National Park Service's website at http://www.nps.gov/yell/index.htm.
